Reading Recovery is a short term intervention for first
grade children who find the beginning steps of learning to read extra
challenging. Reading Recovery teachers receive one year of very specialized
training and continue to participate in monthly staff development training over
the course of their entire career. M.L King Elementary is very privileged to be
able to offer this special program to our first grade students. Students chosen
to participate in Reading will received daily specialized one-on-one instruction
for 30 minutes each day. The intervention lasts from 12 to 20 weeks depending on
the student's rate of progress.
Here are some fun thinking games that you can play . . .
on the go . . . anywhere.
1. "Three Favorites"
- pick a category like movies or TV shows, take turns naming your top
favorites choices. Explain your choice.
2. "Your word ends with ___, my word is ___"
- one person says a word like, dog, which ends
with "g". The next person must say a word that begins with "g" etc.
"What Doesn't Belong" -
start with a list of three things like, plate, bowl, cup. Each player
says what doesn't fit and why. The best part is that there's no right
answer. It's all in how
cleverly you reason.
